On 23rd of October, year 2001, the entire game has changed. A lot of things shifted and the traditional actions were left behind. And this occurred because of a small 5-gigabyte computer with a touch wheel that allows you to play over 1000 songs right inside your pocket. Online music libraries came into picture.
It was none other than the introduction of the iPod. Steve Job’s latest gizmo gadget on that very date has drastically shifted the music technology, but it wasn’t the first. Since 1977, Vinyl LPs have been on a steady decline. In 1983, cassette tapes officially out-stand vinyl for consumers, was able to enjoy the limelight for 9 years, and were trumped yet again by compact discs (Cds) in 1992. It is safe to say that since the 1980s, digital music has been traveling across fiber-optic cables it’s just recently that it has been recognized as a the king of all formats.
The music library industry was able to stand the test of time. The industry was able to keep up with the latest trends in technology through online music libraries. This has left the CD days behind. Literally today, music is available right at your fingertips and at the click of a button. Today, you will no longer be stuck using the same old tracks and audio for your production. Fresh music is available anytime, and you can get them wherever you are.
In general, online music libraries offer “search and download” feature on a website or program. Each track has all the information, like description, tempo, instruments and genre, which has allowed anyone to search by simply keying in keywords. This has enable the people to easily search and buy the music file that they are looking for. And it has gone social as well. You can save favorite tracks and share to your friends or audience.
If there’s one great lesson from what has happened in the past.. it would be that the future of the music industry is totally unpredictable. Steve Jobs is just one of the people who has the hand to change the path, and online music libraries will be right there with him for sure.

Negative media attention on music piracy comes at a time when technology has made it easier to download free music than ever before. While music piracy has resulted in changes to copyright law, many internet communities exist that are downloading music for free. Not only is it possible to get free downloads, many music fans and enthusiasts are doing it legally without breaking any laws.
Digital recording allows many aspiring artists to create and upload mp3 files of their own music, often recorded at home for low cost. Many major label and unsigned bands, underground artists, singer-songwriters, and DJs have websites promoting their music and offer new or existing fans the option to download free music. Social networking sites will often feature the option for download music for free from new and local artists looking to promote themselves by offering curious fans music for free to download. This form of promotion is encouraged by many artists.
Many bands and musicians today are taper-friendly. This means that they permit and often encourage fans to record their concerts and live shows to share on the internet. Most taper-friendly bands actually require that downloads of their shows remain free. By offering live shows to fans free of charge, artists form a friendly bond with their audiences and inevitably help attract new fans to their concerts. Fans are treated to download free music and participate in growing the artist’s fan base through word-of-mouth promotion.
Not all music that is free is piracy. Many artists harness the internet, digital recording and distribution to further their careers and allow fans to download free music legally.

Free music identification software(search engines) comes in several different platforms, operating under several different parameters depending on your needs. It can be be windows/Macintosh compatible via download, it can be web based via your browser, or it can be downloaded to your cell phone, particularly iPhone or blackberry.
But why would I want or need it? What does it do? How does it work?
All great questions which I will endeavor to answer. In a nutshell, this software enables you to obtain the title, artist, and album name for a song you’ve heard/are hearing but don’t know.
Let’s say in the process of recording for example internet radio(which I happen to do a lot), you may have been multitasking and weren’t as mindful of the track info as you should, and missed it. Music identification software can help obtain this for you.
You may be driving, and hear a song on the radio. Open the cell phone app, and hold your phone near a speaker for 10+ seconds or so, and the app will name it for you.
What if you can only hum, whistle, or sing a part of the song?…to quote the t.v. commercial “There’s an app for that”, and it’s not only for the iPhone.
You can also clean up misnamed/unnamed tracks in your music library.
This kind of software works by enabling you to access a particular music database. Digital music, or music in general has a signature which is called a “fingerprint”, which the software can read, and then compare with what is contained in its’ aforementioned database. The fingerprint can be based on parameters such as: melody(voice), rhythm,a sample played on a virtual instrument, melodic contour, beat/tapping et.al. It can then relay that info on to you…and the kicker is they’re mostly free!
However, let’s not get too excited and infer too rosy a picture. All the software/databases have limitations, and areas of specialty. These are after all just some more tools, albeit very useful ones.

In the middle of November, Universal Music filed an extensive copyright lawsuit against YouTube, not long after Google moved to purchase it. So, what does this portend?
As you undoubtedly know, YouTube is a site that allows people to post videos of all sorts. Sometimes the videos are their own and sometimes they are copied from other locations. This second category has raised a number of issues in the cyber law field with most of the questions surrounding copyright. Specifically, many wonder how this situation is anything different than what happened with Napster and similar sites. With Universal’s lawsuit, we are about to find out.
Copyright is often a misunderstood area of the law, particularly when it is applied to the internet. Copyright is simple the right of a party to control the distribution of the work in question. The party is usually the creator of the work, but they can sell it off to another party if they wish. Regardless, the party has the right to license out their work to other parties for distribution in exchange for compensation. When someone uses the piece without the consent of the party, they are infringing upon the copyright.
Unlike Napster, many media companies have entered negotiations with YouTube to try to resolve copyright issues up front. Although every deal is different, copyright infringement issues are usually resolved by paying royalties to the offended party. In this case, Universal and YouTube actually entered such negotiations. With the filing of the lawsuit, it obviously didn’t work out. The reported problem was the fact an unreleased Jay-Z music video appeared on YouTube. Obviously, Universal felt its thunder had been stolen.
One must wonder what Google thinks of all of this. Although a brilliant search engine company, Google has a history of falling on its face when it comes to legal issues ranging from privacy protection to swiping executives from other companies, particularly Microsoft. With YouTube, many wondered if Google was purchasing one giant lawsuit. Apparently, this may have occurred to the powers that be at Google as rumors abound that hundreds of millions of dollars of the purchase price were set aside to cover lawsuits. Time to break out the check book!
Regardless, the dispute between Universal and YouTube/Google looks to be significant in the development of copyright law on the net. This is definitely something worth keeping an eye on.

When creating a simple music sequence, there are many programs available to you online. Most of them are free-due to the decrease in popularity for this type of music style-and are pretty easy to find. Sequencers however are typically not featured by themselves-they are implemented into other software and tools. They have upgraded some of the features for the basic online music sequencer though. You have to know more about it by reading the article below.
Techno-music is one of the most common styles that you can easily make with an online music sequencer. Since new, more technologically advanced programs have become more popular, the sequencer mainly focuses on the tracks. You can create simple tones in a MIDI format and arrange them however you like online.
A lot of online sequencers are also used for training. Since sequencers are based around the beats, using this for drumming practice is done in a synch. You can also use music sequencers for practicing your guitar strokes and with other instruments as well. Many of the new electric programmable pianos feature music sequencers as well. This allows those neat pianos that teach you how to play a song, able to do so.
Since music sequencers are a little out-dated on their own, they are now featured in score producing software. Sequencers allow you to monitor your individual track and are what keeps your beats and measures in the right format. If your key signature says 4/4-that means four beats per measure-your sequencer will keep your music writing in check with it.

Music videos have been around for quite some time, and they have evolved in many ways since their earliest inceptions. Changes and advancements in technology, as well as in the ways that we access our entertainment and music, have forced music videos to change in even more ways. Here is a brief history of music videos, along with a look toward the future and what we may be able to expect.
The first music videos weren’t the short little clips that we now know, capturing one song. Instead, they were entire promotional films. Images of The Beatles and all of their feature length movies, as well as the dozens of movies that Elvis Presley appeared in, all come to mind. These movies had many songs in them, and had plots and acting as well.
There was no platform for short music clips anywhere, however there was an outlet for movies and so this was the channel that was used. Then live performances on shows such as the Ed Sullivan show became popularized. While there was no production to these, because these were clips with only one song performed they were much more similar to the music videos of today than the promotional films were.
Then along came MTV, and the true evolution of the music video began. Now musicians and record companies had a platform where they could showcase their latest efforts, in any artistic form that they wanted. Videos of this era quickly became extremely extravagant, with millions of dollars poured into production and planning.
Think about a video such as Thriller by Michael Jackson. The video was extremely well produced and directed, and it was amazingly intricate and artful. It’s one of the most recognizable music videos of all time, perhaps the single most, and it shows the level of effort and spending that was popular at the time.
The peak may have come in 1995 when Mark Romanek directed “Scream” for Michael and Janet Jackson, the most expensive music video ever produced, weighing in at $7,000,000. Madonna holds the next three spots for budget busting videos with price tags ranging from $5,000,000 to $6,100,000.
Romanek along with other video directors such as David Fincher, launched successful carreers directing feature films as a direct result of their video work. Michel Gondry is another great example. His work with such bands as The White Stripes, Bjork, and Foo Fighters helped him to establish Partisan Pictures which produced the such films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind, Rewind.
However, as the music video industry became saturated around the end of the 1990′s, the spending on music videos decreased. This also coincides with the drop off in record sales as time has gone on. The drop off is a result of many factors, including new ways to enjoy and access music such as MP3 players and iPods, along with free online radio stations and of course illegal music downloads.
With less revenue and potential, there was less reason for record companies to be so extravagant with their budgets. That’s not to say that all of the spending and all of the creativity are gone. There are of course still plenty of high quality music videos, and big budget ones as well. However, by and large the focus has shifted a bit. Not to mention the fact that MTV no longer shows videos like they once did.
So many people today watch their television and movies online through sites like YouTube and Hulu that the way entertainment is presented to us is changing by extreme degrees. In the future, as the medium evolves to keep up with the times, it would not be surprising to see the medium completely divorced from television as we know it.
Instead they will be distributed on YouTube and through Facebook, MySpace and other online platforms. Artists may even be able to put up interactive music videos and albums on their websites, where users can choose what they want to see and how they want to see it. It’s just one of the exciting possibilities for music videos of the future.
